Plan in advance

The most important thing about planning any move but especially a cross country move is to plan it months in advance. Handling short notice moves can be very stressful and hectic. They aren’t easy to handle. But if you take the time to plan your move, this won’t be the case. It is going to be much easier for you to control everything that needs to be done and you’ll know where you’re standing throughout the whole move. If you don’t organize your cross country move in advance, you could end up having a very stressful move.

To organize your move, you are going to create a moving checklist. This list should contain all the information about your long-distance relocation. Everything from your moving budget to the address of your new home and the date of your move. This way it is going to be much easier for you to get everything done on time.

Hire a moving company for your cross country move

The most important thing when you need to organize your cross country move is to hire movers. Moving across the country without movers is a very bad idea. Having a DIY cross country move is only going to cause a lot of stress and it could end up being far more expensive than if you were to hire movers in the first place.

You need to make sure that you hire a reliable moving company that you can find on Verified Movers. Hiring movers has plenty of benefits for your relocation process. Not only is it going to be less stressful but it is also going to last much shorter. Remember to hire movers in advance too. This way you’ll know the exact date of your move and organizing everything else is going to become much easier for you and your family.

About packing supplies

As you can see, we mentioned two different types of boxes – cardboard and plastic ones. You can choose from one or the other but we recommend having both. Cardboard boxes are great but plastic ones are far better. Plastic boxes are reusable which makes them eco-friendly. They are also much sturdier and easier to carry which means that they can hold more things inside of them. Plastic boxes are water-resistant so if you are moving during the winter this is going to protect some of your fragile items. Plastic boxes are great for moving books, for example.

You will also need a bubble pack or wrapping paper for securing fragile items. Use tape to secure your boxes. Packing peanuts come in handy when there’s extra room in the box. This way your belongings won’t tumble around as much. Vacuum bags are the best thing you can use for packing clothing, covers, towels, etc. They are water-proof and they keep your clothes clean and smelling fresh. They also make relocating these things much easier. Plastic foil isn’t such an eco-friendly packing supply but you need it for wrapping your furniture in order to keep the dirt away. You’ll need these even if you are moving locally with your family.

How to pack?

It is very important that you pack your home the right way. Packing correctly is going to make moving in and unpacking much easier. That is why we decided to give you some tips if you aren’t sure how you should pack. The first thing you need to make sure is that you start packing on time. Start a few days before the move. This way you will be able to do it the right way and to take breaks and not be in a hurry. Packing in a hurry isn’t good either.

What you must have in mind is that the order of packing needs to exist. You need to make sure that you firstly pack the rooms that you don’t need on a daily basis. These are usually basements, attics, guest rooms. After you pack those, you can decide for yourself which are the rooms that you don’t need to use every day. Have in mind that if you have children their rooms should be packed last.

When packing, it is important not to pack everything at once. Packing your whole house is only going to create a huge mess. You need to pack just one room at a time. This way it is going to be much more efficient and faster to pack. Don’t forget to create a packing list and to label your boxes while you are packing. Decluttering is also a very important part of packing. Get rid of everything that you don’t need. You could also read our guide for a successful moving day for even more information.
